Complete Baby Registry Checklist: What to Buy and What You Don't Need

A complete and updated baby registry list. What you truly need, what's a waste, and tips to save money when preparing for your baby.

When Should You Start Preparing?

The ideal time to start preparing your baby's essentials is between the 20th and 28th week of pregnancy. At this stage:

  • You already know the baby's sex (if you choose to)
  • You still have the energy to research and shop
  • There's time to take advantage of sales
  • Your belly isn't too big for shopping trips yet

Baby Clothing

Essentials (Invest in These)

| Item | Quantity | Why? | |------|----------|------| | Short-sleeve bodysuits | 8-10 | The most-worn daily item | | Long-sleeve bodysuits | 6-8 | For nights and cool days | | Footed sleepers | 6-8 | Practical for outings and sleep | | Footed pants | 5-6 | Pairs well with bodysuits | | Socks | 6-8 pairs | Get lost and dirty fast | | Hats | 2-3 | For the first days and cold weather | | Mittens | 2-3 pairs | Prevents scratching in the early days | | Jacket/cardigan | 2-3 | For cold days |

Clothing Tips

  • Buy newborn and 0-3 month sizes. Many parents buy all newborn and the baby outgrows them quickly
  • Prefer snap buttons on the front (not over-the-head styles)
  • Avoid bows, cords, and decorations that could come loose
  • Wash everything beforehand with gentle, fragrance-free detergent
  • Don't buy too many newborn-size clothes. The baby grows fast

Hygiene and Bath

| Item | Quantity | |------|----------| | Baby bathtub | 1 | | Hooded towels | 3-4 | | Gentle liquid soap | 1 | | Mild shampoo | 1 | | Cotton balls | 2 bags | | Baby safety swabs | 1 box | | Diaper rash cream | 2 tubes | | Newborn diapers | 2-3 packs | | Size 1 diapers | 4-5 packs | | Alcohol-free wipes | 3-4 packs | | Brush and comb set | 1 | | Baby nail clippers or scissors | 1 | | Bath thermometer | 1 | | Digital body thermometer | 1 |

Hygiene Tips

  • Start stocking up on size 1 diapers (the baby stays in newborn size briefly)
  • Diaper rash cream: use at every change as prevention
  • Daily bath with soap only on the body. Clean the face with cotton and water

Nursery and Sleep

| Item | Quantity | |------|----------| | Crib with firm mattress | 1 | | Fitted crib sheets | 3-4 | | Waterproof mattress protector | 2 | | Sleep sack | 2-3 | | Baby monitor | 1 | | Dim nightlight | 1 | | Blackout curtain | 1 | | White noise machine | 1 (or app) |

What NOT to Put in the Crib

  • Pillow (until age 1)
  • Loose blankets
  • Crib bumpers (suffocation risk)
  • Stuffed animals

Use a sleep sack instead of blankets. It's safer and more practical.

Breastfeeding

| Item | Quantity | |------|----------| | Nursing pillow | 1 | | Nursing bra | 3-4 | | Breast pads | 2 boxes | | Lanolin cream | 1 | | Breast shells | 1 pair | | Breast pump | 1 | | Glass storage bottles for milk | 5-6 |

If formula feeding: bottles (4-6), nipples (4-6), bottle brush (1), sterilizer (1).

Going Out

| Item | Quantity | |------|----------| | Stroller | 1 | | Infant car seat | 1 | | Diaper bag | 1 | | Baby carrier/wrap | 1 | | Portable changing pad | 1 | | Stroller sun shade | 1 |

Money-Saving Tip

The infant car seat is required by law. Many models attach to strollers, and the travel system is a worthwhile investment.

Baby First Aid Kit

| Item | Purpose | |------|---------| | Saline solution | Cleaning nose and eyes | | Nasal aspirator | Clearing nasal congestion | | Digital thermometer | Checking for fever | | Infant acetaminophen (Tylenol) | Fever and pain (from 3 months) | | Infant ibuprofen | Fever and pain (from 6 months) | | Diaper rash cream | Prevention and treatment | | Vitamin D drops | Daily supplementation | | Cotton balls | General cleaning |

Don't buy medications before the baby is born. Your pediatrician will prescribe exactly what your baby needs at the first appointment.

What You DON'T Need to Buy

Items many parents buy and regret:

  • Shoes: the baby doesn't walk; socks are enough
  • Bottle warmer: you can warm in a bowl of hot water
  • Bathtub with built-in changing table: takes up too much space
  • Too many newborn clothes: the baby outgrows them in weeks
  • Co-sleeper AND full crib: choose one or the other
  • Portable pacifier sterilizer: boiling water works fine
  • Crib decorations: they're safety hazards
  • Complete crib bedding set (with bumper, comforter): not safe to use

How Much Does the Basics Cost?

| Category | Price Range | |----------|------------| | Clothing | $100-$400 | | Hygiene and diapers | $60-$150 | | Nursery and sleep | $200-$700 | | Breastfeeding | $50-$150 | | Going out | $200-$700 | | First aid kit | $25-$50 | | Basic total | $635-$2,150 |

Tips for Saving Money

  • Accept hand-me-down cribs, strollers, and clothes
  • Buy diapers on sale months in advance
  • Join local parent buy/sell/trade groups online
  • Check out baby consignment shops and thrift stores
  • Ask for specific items at the baby shower instead of clothes
